The growing problem of accessing old digital file formats is a "ticking time bomb", the chief executive of the UK National Archives has warned.

History seems to be stuck on repeat, again. One of my first tasks in my first IT job was to write programs and scripts that did automatic file format conversions. The programs were in BASIC, on DOS systems. In the next place, I did similar things using scripts on Sun machines. AWK is still one of the neatest things around, if you know how to use it. Maybe soon I will stop being unemployable...

Meanwhile, the NHS can not get sufficient supplies of diamorphine to stop the agony of terminal cancer sufferers. Diamorphine is heroin, and it can be made from Afghan poppies.

So, instead of destroying these crops, which makes the farmers become terrorists, so that we need to spend more on the "War on Terror", why don't we buy the whole crop, process it and use it in hospices, hospitals, etc?

Come on, fatuous Americans, why won't you let the world work properly, instead of trying to impose your lunatic rule on us all?

The Hubble Ultra Deep Field or HUDF is an image of a small region of space composited from Hubble Space Telescope data accumulated over a period from September 3, 2003 through January 16, 2004. It is the deepest image of the universe ever taken in visible light, looking back in time more than 13 billion years. The HUDF contains an estimated 10,000 galaxies. The patch of sky in which the galaxies reside (just one-tenth the diameter of the full moon) was chosen because of the low density of bright stars. Although most of the targets visible in the Hubble image can also be seen at infrared wavelengths by ground-based telescopes, Hubble is the only instrument which can make observations of these distant targets at visible wavelengths.

The historian and royal biographer Robert Lacey (read, Charlie's pet propagandist) said last night "The phone-ins cannot find anyone to speak out against him today and in support of the newspapers. Prince Charles appears to be carving out this creaky role in national life and people seem to be growing fond of his outbursts and gaffes."

The fact that I did not "phone-in" to somewhere or other can not be taken as proof that I am in support of this imbecile. I can't even remember when it was announced that "phone-ins" were the new way that truth and sense would be discovered. Any idiot who hands out copies of his diary to over a hundred people should not be totally surprised when they are published. And a judge caving in to pressure from some inbred "royal" cretin is not proof of a legal principle, just proof that sycophancy exists.

The "creaky role in public life" looks to me like an overprivileged millionaire dimwit who has not yet had a proper job, in spite of being handed a university degree without having to do anything remotely like real studying, given pretend military positions that involve lots of fancy uniforms and parades but no chance of getting shot like real soldiers do, and going around making stupid remarks that sound increasingly like his impressively racist father. As for "growing fond of his outbursts and gaffes", I find him cringe-makingly embarassing, and desperately hope that the rest of the world does not believe that he represents me and my opinions in any way at all. So there.

It turns out that the Bong Recreation Area in Wisconsin, USA, is nothing to do with either

a piece of rock climbing equipment

a way of destroying the lungs

but is instead a very sensible use of what was going to be a jet fighter base. It was named after famous pilot Richard Bong, as I am sure you knew... and it even has places where you can launch rockets, if that is what you like to do...
